SUPERBLOOM 2026 IS HERE! ANZA-BORREGO ALREADY BURSTING WITH WILDFLOWERS

The California superbloom that everyone predicted is officially underway! Following above-average winter rainfall and a burst of warmth in February, wildflowers are already carpeting the deserts and hillsides of Southern California in brilliant colors.

๐ŸŒป WHERE TO SEE BLOOMS RIGHT NOW

Anza-Borrego Desert State Park (Borrego Springs, San Diego County)
The show has already started here! Visitors are reporting carpets of yellow desert sunflowers, purple sand verbena, white dune evening primroses, and pink-hued brown-eyed primroses. The best viewing right now:

โ€ข Henderson Canyon Road โ€” The most spectacular display currently
โ€ข Borrego Palm Canyon โ€” Beautiful blooms along the trail
โ€ข Coyote Canyon โ€” Growing displays of wildflowers
โ€ข Arroyo Salado Campground โ€” Desert lilies and sand verbena

Big, showy wildflowers already visible include desert sunflowers, desert lilies, sand verbena, dune evening primroses, datura, and chuparosa.

๐ŸŒธ COMING SOON: MID-MARCH TO APRIL

Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve (Lancaster, LA County)
The iconic orange California poppies haven't started yet but are expected to begin blooming mid-March. This is typically the most Instagram-worthy superbloom location in SoCal, with rolling hills covered in brilliant orange.

Carrizo Plain National Monument (San Luis Obispo County)
One of California's best-kept secrets for wildflower viewing. Blooms typically peak in late March to mid-April.

Santa Monica Mountains (LA/Ventura Counties)
Hillside wildflowers are beginning to emerge. Expect lupines, California poppies, and bush sunflowers along popular trails.

Joshua Tree National Park
Desert wildflowers are starting to appear at lower elevations. Peak bloom expected in March.

๐Ÿ“ท TIPS FOR VISITING

โ€ข Go early! The best light for photos is before 10 AM and after 4 PM
โ€ข Stay on marked trails โ€” stepping on flowers kills them and prevents future blooms
โ€ข Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and a hat โ€” desert temperatures can be extreme
โ€ข Check bloom reports before driving: borregowildflowers.org has live updates for Anza-Borrego
โ€ข No picking! It's illegal to pick wildflowers in California state parks
โ€ข Download a wildflower ID app like iNaturalist or Seek to identify what you see
โ€ข Pack out all trash โ€” leave no trace

โš ๏ธ A FRAGILE DISPLAY

For a true superbloom to unfold, conditions must remain favorable: well-timed rain, mild temperatures, no sudden heat spikes, and no invasions from hungry caterpillars or aggressive non-native plants like Sahara mustard. The recent February heat wave may have accelerated germination in some areas.

The bloom window is typically 2-4 weeks at each location, so plan your visits soon!
